Alien Chicks – Madmen
The question posed by Aliens Chicks’ “Madmen”, the third preview of their upcoming EP, Toys Taken At Birth (out Oct. 2 on Alcopop! Records), is what happens to democracy when things get too extreme for democracy to matter?
From every aspect of their previous work “Madmen” seems to fit right in with everything else the band does well: aggressive, distorted guitars; an extremely energetic and fast-moving bass line; and hooks to help the listener follow along, even as the song becomes increasingly chaotic and hard to follow. “Madmen,” is the third version of the EP (following “5/4” and their rendition of Missy Elliot’s “Get Ur Freak On”) that Aliens Chicks have presented thus far. Between the three of these songs, it appears that the band does not plan on sticking to any one specific musical style.
The lyrics move from anger and frustration to something that could be interpreted as some type of authoritarian dream. According to Aliens Chicks, “the lyrics are quite direct and serious…which is not typical for us.” I believe that because of its seriousness, that is why it works. There isn’t any metaphor or other creative device helping to explain how this song is supposed to feel. It simply states the fact in a straightforward manner.
Kulturclub Schön Schön is located approximately 15 minutes from my house. Therefore, I will be attending this show live in February.
